After Google’s massive algorithm update last week requiring a mobile-friendly design in order to rank higher in search engine results, Lawyer.com reviewed from its database over 100,000 U.S. law firm websites for mobile readiness. Using Google’s mobile-compliant test suite, Lawyer.com, an online law firm directory, found, “46% of small firm websites and 39% of all firm websites failed”.
Websites that fail Google’s tests will be bumped down the search engine ranks in favor of mobile-friendly sites hurting law firms that utilize internet marketing.
The survey’s results draws attention to the risks for legal practices of all sizes that have not kept up on Google’s search methods and mobile-friendly design requirements. In 2014, mobile web traffic exceeded PC traffic and the number of smartphone devices now exceeds 7 billion.
“This statistic highlights the mobile share of organic search engine visits in the United States. As of the first quarter of 2015, it was found that mobile devices accounted for 45 percent of organic search engine visits. In 2013, 57.9 percent of the online population accessed the internet from their mobile phone. This figure is expected to grow to 79.2 percent in 2017.” – Statista
By now, your legal practice shouldn’t need to be persuaded that having a mobile-friendly website for your law firm is crucial. While statistics on the percentage of users who visit your website through a mobile device will vary, there is no ignoring the fact that more and more visitors are accessing your website through a mobile device.
“Google indicates that 72% of mobile users want sites to be mobile-friendly when visiting from their mobile device. Furthermore, 61% of users said they are likely to leave if the site is not mobile-friendly.”
Google is continuously striving to provide users with the most relevant results for their search terms; and with the rapid increase in users searching from their mobile devices, this was the next logical step.
